The Estonian struggle for freedom left its marks on the history of several other nations. According to legend, the only thing that saved Valdemar II, the King of Denmark, from defeat by the Estonians in 1219 was a red banner with a white cross, the Dannebrog, which fell from the sky as a revelation.
