Finland: Mother Tongue Day in Helsinki

The Mother Tongue Day is traditionally marked with visiting the Latokartano school, and a seminar for teachers and parents in the Estonian House. Before the seminar, the Society of Education in the Estonian Language awards the participants in the drawing and writing competition of young adults.
Timetable:
17.00 The Society and Children's Club award participants in the writing and drawing competition.
18.00 Seminar for teachers and parents
Lecturer of Estonian at the University of Tartu, Kersti Lepajõe, talks about whether and why it is important to maintain one's language and culture abroad.
The coordinator at the Estonian Institute of teaching Estonian abroad, Raina Reiljan, explains about the Compatriots Programme.
The seminar is followed by discussions about the possibility and necessity of preserving Estonian language and culture in Finland. Estonians with years in Finland, and the newly arrived talk about their experiences.
The day finishes with coffee and Estonian cake.
